Qualities and Drawbacks

Unaging

1- or 2-point Quality

My pride handed me a snappy reply, but I bit it back. One learns a few things over the centuries.
--The Courts of Chaos, by Roger Zelazny

Whether because of a sip from the cup of a carpenter or the purchase of a strange painting, a character with this Quality ages very slowly indeed. This Quality comes in two levels. The first implies a greatly reduced aging process. A character with this level of the Quality can choose up to four levels of the Age Quality. A character with the second level of the Quality simply doesn't age, and can take any amount of Age she wants. Additionally, the character heals faster; the first level lets the character heal at the rate of two life points per day times the character's Constitution level, and the second at four life points per day times the character's Constitution level.

Vampires, Mok'tagar Demons and other old and wrinkly types already get this Quality for free (sorta…), so taking it twice would be a bit dumb, wouldn't it?

Blind

6-point Drawback

Marcie: How're you gonna fight someone you can't see?
--1.11 Out of Mind, Out of Sight

You're blind. There's no easy way to say it. The world of sight is forever lost to you. This means you won't have to watch the world sliding into chaos and mayhem, which can actually be a good thing. However, it also means you don't get to watch much of anything else.

Being blind is a serious handicap to most people, perhaps crippling. To read regular text is now all but impossible - braille script is recommended. This restricts research to such texts as have been translated with blind people in mind. Also, you can't navigate too well in unfamiliar environments.

In combat, you are essentially fighting blind (duh). The rules are similar to those of fighting the Invisible (see Magic Box supplement, page 90), but there are key differences. Firstly, using a firearm is impossible for a blind person, unless the target is at point-blank range. Secondly, though familiarity with being blind allow the character a free action to sense her opponent, the modifier to hit a sensed opponent is -5. Similarly, the character is at -5 to defend herself from attacks.

Blind Master

3-point Quality

Obi-Wan: Your eyes can deceive you; don't trust them.
--Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope

By compensating for your loss of sight by the use of your other senses, you have turned your blindness into an advantage… a bit, at least.

By concentrating and making a roll using your Perception (not doubled) plus 6, you can get impressions of the surrounding environment from hearing, smelling, or sensing vibrations in the ground. Grasping vague, easily noticeable events only require one Success Level, while complex shapes and motions require five or more.

Your ability to read regular text is still very limited, but by managing at least 7 Success Levels at a Perception (not doubled) roll, you can actually read by feeling the changes in paper made by the drying ink.

You are also less easy to lie to, as subtle vocal mannerisms are more obvious to you. You receive a +3 bonus to Perception when trying to remain un-conned in such situations.

Fighting is significantly easier with this Quality, but still harder than it would have been if you could see your opponent. Unlike sighted people, however, you suffer no penalties for smoke, fog, darkness or blinding light - out of sight is out of mind. Unlike the truly blind, you get to roll once for each fight scene, using Perception (not doubled) plus Notice. The amount of Success Levels you get, minus 10, equals your minus on all actions for the duration of the scene.

Cursed by Fate

1-, 2- or 4-point Drawback

Spike: Death is on your heels, baby, and sooner or later it's gonna catch you. And part of you wants it… not only to stop the fear and uncertainty, but because you're just a little bit in love with it.
--5.7 Fool for Love

Karmic debt, dark family secrets or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time has landed this character in major-league badness. A character Cursed by Fate is destined for something nasty and possibly fatal, or just unable by nature to get her way. This Drawback comes in three levels, depending on the severity of the Fate. Remember that this is Destiny, not the mafia - there's no one to bribe or avoid.

For one point, your fate is bad, but not insurmountably so. It can be fought against, staved off, or even defeated. An example could be an inability to have normal relationship (much like the Love (Tragic) Drawback), an upcoming relationship that will end badly, or something similar. The second, 2-point version of this drawback is more serious, like losing someone close to you or being injured in a permanent fashion. The third level, worth 4 points, is the real kicker. It means your character is fated to face utter personal ruination. Whether bodily, mentally, spiritually or all of the above, your character is ultimately going to face a dark, ignomious, tragic end.
